Art
At our school, art is taught as a discipline where children learn to work as artists. Children explore how artists develop ideas, experiment with materials, and express meaning through their work. Through this approach, children learn that art is both a creative process and a way of understanding the world.
Our curriculum is structured using a task design approach, ensuring that learning is accessible to all children. Carefully planned tasks guide children through the artistic process, helping them to develop skills progressively while building confidence in their own creative abilities. Each unit links to prior learning, allowing children to revisit techniques, refine their skills, and deepen their understanding of artistic concepts over time.
Children work with a wide range of materials and media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed media. Through experimentation and practice, children learn how artists select and use materials to achieve particular effects and communicate ideas.
Our art curriculum also helps children understand art within a broader cultural and historical context. Children study artists from different time periods, exploring both the history of art and contemporary artistic practice. We introduce children to artists from different cultures and traditions, helping them to appreciate the diversity of artistic expression around the world.
Where possible, we make meaningful links with local artists and our community, enabling children to see how art connects to the place in which they live today. These experiences help children understand that art is a living, evolving discipline.
Through this approach, children develop the confidence to experiment, reflect, and express their ideas, gaining both technical skills and an appreciation for the rich diversity of artistic traditions.
